CPTED Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED - pronounced sep-ted) is the proper design and effective use of the built environment that can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidents of crime and an improvement in the quality of life - a definition that has changed little since C. Ray Jeffrey first coined the phrase. CPTED's interdisciplinary roots are based in the fields of sociology, psychology, ecology of crime, environmental criminology, criminal justice, and architecture. CPTED has borrowed tenets from the social sciences and the physical sciences to create a holistic approach to explaining the environment and people's behavior. The 4 principles of basic CPTED are: - Natural Access Control
- Natural Surveillance
- Territorial Reinforcement
- Maintenance

CPTED is going Green... Reducing your carbon footpring in not only fashionable, it is the right thing to do for your family, your community, and most importantly, your planet. The Community Development & Crime Prevention Institute, LLC has extensively researched how each of the four principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design can not only reduce the opportunities and occurances for crime, but also concurrently reduce your localities' carbon footprint. CDCPI is committed to creating a healthier environment for us all to live, work, play, and grow together. As such, each of our courses include eco-friendly solutions to our not-always-so friendly environments. As Kermit the Frog so eloquently noted in 1970, "It's not easy being green". When employing CPTED, you should always consider your "green" options. When considering crime prevention measures, you should not only strive to improve your community's quality of life, but also simultaenously endeavor to inflict minimal harm on your environment. |
